Brothers In Arms

I sometimes sit with a beer in my hand, staring out into the emptiness thinking of my past, present and future. Am happy to see that a lot has been achieved by me being a husband, parent and friend. However, the same can’t be said with my working life…..let’s put in record that I have been in the Project and Construction line countless of donkey years working with the same company, which has the same unchanging philosophy, which has the same unchanging attitude towards its staffs and the same of..aaarrrrggg!!

Let it be said that there have been an influx of new staffs and departure of old staffs. New systems has been implemented…some good, some mediocre and some down right shitty.

So far, it has been ok for me…ok in the sense that the bosses do not really bug or disturb me. Salary, increments and incentives are ok, nothing great to shout about ( to fucking shy to even write it down…hehehe ). Benefits can be improved ( wishful thinking? ). Attitude of the Management / the Powers that be can be greatly improved ( yea…keep on dreaming la )

BUT how I wish they understand the meaning of “TEAMWORK” and VALUE IT. China man styled management will not work nowadays. Listening to matters with an open mind, taking constructive criticisms and fair chance is the word for success ( now and the future ).

Below quotes might help our cause or might not but what the hell……as they say in life “there is no satisfying everyone all of the time”

Thomas Edison, when asked why he had a team of twenty-one assistants
“If I could solve all the problems myself, I would”

Robert Yates
“It is amazing what can be accomplished when nobody cares about who gets the credit”

Coach Phil Jackson Chicago Bulls
“The strength of the team is each individual member...the strength of each member is the team”

Robert F. Bales
“Effective teamwork will not take the place of knowing how to do the job or how to manage the work. Poor teamwork, however, can prevent effective final performance. And it can also prevent team members from gaining satisfaction in being a member of a team and the organization”

Casey Stengel
“Gettin' good players is easy. Gettin' 'em to play together is the hard part”

Mark Twain
“Synergy — the bonus that is achieved when things work together harmoniously”

Douglas McGregor
“Most teams aren't teams at all but merely collections of individual relationships with the boss. Each individual is vying with the others for power, prestige and position”

Benjamin Franklin
“We must indeed all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately”

Katzenbach & Smith
“Real teams don't emerge unless individuals in them take risks involving conflict, trust, inter-dependence and hard work”

How I wish, how we wish…let’s keep our fingers crossed that this year might be different from others. A toast to my colleagues and fighting companions wherever you might be…..YAAAAM SEEEENG!

My 3rd Wife

Finally managed to convinced wifey to let me buy a Superbike…..woooohoooooo!!!!! Look out biking world.....Jamie’s back!!

Was so damn excited that I started to put out feelers by contacting my old kakis to inform them of my intention to buy a bike. Fuuuyoooh!!! news sure travel fast because I was bombarded with calls a few hours later from people offering to sell me their bikes.

I had to take down their numbers, models, cubic capacity and selling price to narrow down my search to make sure that its within my means and wants.

With a max budget of RM45k I started my hunt…

Test Bike 1
Honda CBR 900 RR, Year 1999-2000, price RM42,800, mileage 30,000++
Pros: Handles like a dream, fuel consumption ok, Yoshimura exhaust set
Cons: Worn out sprocket and chain set, worn our tyres and brakes. Requires about RM2,000 to replace.

Test Bike 2
Kawasaki ZX7R, Year 1995, Price RM25,000, mileage 92,000++
Pros : New tyres and sprocket set, all original parts, engine ok
Cons: I do not like the Air Ram feature on this bike which causes the power band to suddenly spike resulting in control difficulty. Power bald patch at 3500 rpm.

Test Bike 3
Suzuki Bandit 1200, Year 1997, Price RM36,200, mileage 48,000++
Pros: Good mid range torque and power band, Micron exhaust system, good handling
Cons: Fuel guzzler, parts are difficult to obtain, balding tyres, worn sprocket set.

Test Bike 4
Suzuki RF600, Year 1995, Price RM 25,000, mileage 41,000++
Pros: Smooth engine, new tyres, new sprocket set, original paint, aftermarket exhaust system.
Cons: 12-13 year bike, only limited units in Malaysia ( less than 30 units )

After testing four of the above bikes, I finally settled for the Suzuki RF600 unit because:

1) I like the handling at low and high speed. Good low speed handling is essential when one is caught in traffic ( very easy to flick it left and right despite of the 220 kgs dry weight ). No need to elaborate on high speed handling right? One wrong move at high speed and you are mince meat liao ( I tested the RF from Puchong to Putrajaya and back. Managed to throttle her to 230 km/h before running out of road )

2) Engine was surprisingly smooth for a 1995 bike. It shows that it was very well maintained throughout its 12 year lifespan.

3) Parts for the bike are readily available despite having less than 30 units here.

4) Fuel consumption is about RM5 for every 100 km

5) Good powerband for a 600 cc bike. The gradual power curve enables ease of acceleration and deceleration

Got the bike for a steal ( cannot say the transaction amount for fear of spoiling the market..sorry ) from my friend because he needed some urgent moolah to put a down on a RM200k++ house in Bandar Sungai Long ( lucky for me…kekekeke ).

Therefore, I hereby pronounce that the RF600 ( registration ending with 9468 ) is now my official 3rd wife after my wifey and my Chevrolet Junk.

Please accept my advance apologies if in future I accidentally smoke any of you guys/gals on the highway…muahahahaha ( EAT YOUR HEART OUT EDWARD!!!! )

Do That To Me One More Time

Day in, day out we might be faced with the predicament of doing things the correct way. What does it mean by doing things “the correct way”? How does one define “a/the correct way”?

I have experience many forms of “correct ways” through my years of working which I will be more than happy to list down. Please bear in mind that all have their own pros and cons………..and to each their own:

The Book Worm Way
This way entails a person to refer to every single damn detail from a contract or an official form of written agreement or something to that effect AND execute the said job as per guideline.
Pros :
1) The job will 95% be as accordance to required specifications
2) The person in charge will have a clear and defined system of work
3) Job status report will be 90% accurate
Cons:
1) Not practical for jobs with short lead time as a lot of detailing is involved
2) Worker moral will surely decline due to extra high possibilities of rework
3) One sure fire way to get ones car a free “sun roof”
4) One sure fire way to end up in hospital because of the incurred cost over run due to item 2.

As and Where and How Way
This style requires the person(s) to change OR modify to suit whatever they see fit in order to complete the job as per stated in whatever form of written agreement that binds.
Pros:
1) One can get the work done on schedule and as per specifications
2) Can work on jobs that require a short lead time
3) Easier to control overall costs
4) Win – win situation might/will be created between client and main contractor
5) Blue Eye boy of the Management

Cons:
1) One might get in shit for changing the construction or supply specification at the end
2) Job reporting can be quite a chore
3) One might get in deeper shit if one is working with people of “The Book Worm Way”

Bulldozer OR Anything Goes Way
Requires the person to bulldoze their way through the job irrespective of how many non conformance issues that may arise from doing so.
Pros:
1) Job will most likely be completed ahead of schedule
2) Profits might/will remain OR increase
3) Superman in the eyes of the Management
4) Everyone loves a reckless sonofagun
5) No need for frequent meetings as progress of job can be charted visually
6) One sure fire way to make everyone love you ( except the client )

Cons:
1) The client will not like you for not being systematic
2) The client will hate your lack for details
3) Increase the chances of rework
4) Job reporting is busted to hell
5) Schedule is shot to pieces ( you will complete ahead anyway )

Personally I feel that the “As and Where and How Way” suits me just fine till this day but currently I/we are facing a lot of unnecessary problems just because some self centred arsehole on the client’s side is stiff like a shit stick and is of “The Book Worm Way”.

Based on the above illustrations, which is your ( preferred ) way?

Penang, August 2007

Just came back from a trip back to my hometown ( Penang ) with my family ( the reason behind me being M.I.A. ( Missing In Action ) these few days ). It was an enjoyable trip despite the traffic chaos along the North-South Expressway.

Planned the trip with a few fixed agenda in mind :
1) visit my Grandma
2) visit my Grandma’s sister who recently had a stroke
3) visit my God Sister and her family
4) rest and relax

Started the journey by shooting up straight to Sungai Petani where my Grandma now lives with my auntie. Made good time as we reached there about 7 a.m. Took my family for breaky first because it was too early to wake up Grandma. Finished breaky about 8a.m. and popped in to see the old lady.

We were very happy to see Grandma as she was to see us. I had to tell her my name before she could recognize me because her eyesight is getting worse. Was quite sad to see that she lost quite a bit of weight since my last visit. I owe the old lady a lot…too much to put in words. Had to try to hold back my tears like mad but wifey saw through me at once and tried to cheer up the somber mood by chatting on top of her voice like a freight train to Grandma…kekekekeke…thank you wifey.

Left Sungai Petani at about 12 noon for Penang. Checked in at Paradise Sandy Beach Resort and proceeded to take the kids for a swim ( swimming pool and sea ). My kids were bugging me like mad to take them on a wave runner ( jet ski ) that was on rental at a nearby water sports centre. Wifey was ok with it but my mum was a quite apprehensive about the whole thing. Guess she knows that her son is a speed freak huh?

Walked up to the Water Sports Centre and to my surprise I found out that it was run by my friend…wooohooooo!! Normal rental for a wave runner is RM60 for 15 minutes but I paid RM 60 for 45 minutes…that’s what friends are for right..hehehehe

My brother took the first run out with my elder son and I switched places with him about 20 minutes later with my younger son in tow. Made off with the words of “don’t go too fast” ringing in my ear but it was soon lost in the sounds that was made by the wave runner hopping across the waves…pop, pop, pop, pop.

The run with my younger son took 10 minutes before I went back and dropped him off. Isaac ( eldest son ) came up and told me that he wanted me to take him for a ride BUT a faster one as compared to his brother. I said ok, told him to hold on and max depressed the accelerator. The 700 cc engine gave a growl and we were shooting off in no time. I made a few hairpin turns that had Isaac screaming out in glee before pointing the jet ski out into the open sea. I purposely stopped the ski halfway out to show my son the quietness and beauty of the ocean but he was quite unnerved by the quite setting and requested that we go back. Gunned the engine, turned, sped back and was on dry land in no time.

The 2nd day was spend shopping and visiting my mum’s auntie ( grandma’s sister ). She hugged my mum and howled like mad when she saw us....bugger the scene really brought tears to my eyes. This grand auntie is one of my favourites as I used to spend a lot of time with them when I was young. It was very sad to see her in such a state ( stroke left her paralyzed on the right side and slurred speech ) but we managed to do a lot of catch up before the time to go came. We left with the promise to visit her whenever we are in Penang…and that’s a promise that I won’t break.

Next stop was Johnny’s ( my God Sister’s bf ) new apartment. He just finished shifting the day before and we thought it was nice to crash his place while it was still in a mess…hahahaha. I didn’t have the chance to ask Pam ( god sister ) but I think that she will be staying with him in their new pad….GOOD FOR THEM…ABOUT TIME THEY SETTLE DOWN…kekekeke.

We left Pam and Johnny’s place about 4 p.m. and headed back to the hotel. My kids were like…throw off clothes, swim shorts on and into the pool in record time but I took the chance for a 30 minute konk because I foresee another round of jet ski activity coming up. True enough they were bugging to go on the ski again but there an extra catch this time…Isaac said he wanted to go parasailing after jet skiing...I was like, si liao…what to do ar? I am damn scared of heights worrr. Managed to solve the problem by “conning” an instructor to take Isaac up for his maiden parasailing flight.

To tell the truth, I am sure that those on the ground felt more tension as compared to my son ( especially my mum ). Isaac was jabbering non stop after landing and immediately requested to go again…luckily there was not enough light left to facilitate his wants…pheeew.

Left Penang on 12.30noon on Sunday and reached KL about 6.30 p.m. a tired and poofed out lot. Konked early and dreamt of our next holiday trip to Langkawi on 20th September….aaaaahhhhh.
